Fujairah: Local police have arrested a gang of seven Asian men who were involved in stealing rented cars and smuggling them out of the country using forged documents.

The seven gang members used forged passports, driving licences and labour cards to rent cars from car rental companies in Fujairah, Colonel Hamid Mohammad Al Yamahi, Director General of the police operations room, Fujairah police, said.

The Fujairah Police were informed about the gang's illicit activities when the owner of a car rental company lodged a complaint against an Asian man who had rented a bus and not returned it after the rent period ended, Al Yamahi said.

The police formed a team, chaired by Captain Saeed Obaid, head of the Criminal Investigation department, to investigate the case.

The investigation revealed that all the documents kept in the car rental company's possession were forged, Al Yamahi said.

The police team soon traced the gang and arrested everyone involved.

"They confessed to have stolen many cars, smuggled them out of the UAE, and sold them to other Gulf nationals," Al Yamahi said. The gang had stolen different types of vehicles from car rental companies over the past, he said.

The seven members have been referred to the Fujairah public prosecution for legal action to be initiated against them, Al Yamahi added.
