Dubai: A driver narrowly escaped death, surviving attempts on his life by four workers who were subsequently hauled before the courts for trying to run him over with a car, over a Dh7,000 loan - the value of 13 robot-jockeys.

Records said the Afghan driver lend one of the four compatriot suspects, 21-year-old T.M., 13 robot-jockeys after the latter promised to pay him Dh7,000 later.

The 27-year-old driver, A.F., took T.M.'s car keys and mobile phone to pressure him to pay the debt the act, which infuriated the 21-year-old suspect who, along his three associates, stand accused of trying to kill A.F., according to court records.

The victim accused T.M., 28-year-old H.A., 23-year-old M.S. and 32-year-old S.S., of chasing him with their vehicle, knocked him down unconscious and injured his arm and leg.

Permanent disability

The Public Prosecution charged the defendants with pre-meditated attempt to murder the driver, who they left injured with five per cent permanent disability, as confirmed by medical reports.

The suspects were additionally charged with stealing 13 robot-jockeys, which were owned by A.F.'s sponsor. "He failed to pay back the debt on time after I repeatedly asked him for the robot-jockeys' value... on the day of the incident I headed to his workplace and took his car keys and mobile phone to pressure him to pay.

"Later, my workmates informed me that the four suspects came asking about me at my place. They chased me in a blue car and crashed into me... I flew up for a few metres and landed down and hit the tarmac and fell unconscious then I only woke up in the hospital where I was informed that the suspects had been arrested," alleged the victim in his recorded statement.

A police first lieutenant, who interviewed eyewitnesses, confirmed that the suspects assaulted A.F. over a financial dispute.

The suspects were referred to the Dubai Court of First Instance where they pleaded not guilty on Sunday.
