Dubai: Five Bangladeshi workers have been cleared of beating up their supervisor whom they accused of spreading a rumour of a homosexual advance at the labour accommodation.

The Dubai Court of First Instance dismissed the assault charges against the five suspects yesterday due to a lack of evidence.

Records said the suspects, a worker, a clerk, a security guard and two employees, reportedly beat up the 48-year-old Pakistani housing supervisor after they accused him of sparking a rumour which led to the deportation of their compatriot.

The purported victim, R.L., was left with a 20 per cent permanent disability.

The suspects denied the charges against them and pleaded not guilty when they appeared before the court earlier.

The Public Prosecution charged them with assaulting the victim and causing him permanent disability after beating him with their hands, legs and wooden bars.

"A fight erupted between a Pakistani guard and a Bangladeshi worker who claimed that the Pakistani asked to have a homosexual affair with him on the day of the incident.

"The Bangladeshi informed his compatriots who stayed at the same accommodation about the incident.

Deportation

"Later that evening the suspects stormed into my office and brought the worker with them. They accused me of being behind the deportation of the Pakistani guard. I denied this. They beat me unexpectedly," R.L. testified.

He claimed that they repeatedly beat him for 15 minutes until other workers intervened and stopped the assault.

The primary verdict is still subject to appeal.
