Dubai: The three workers detained by police for negligence after a bridge near Dubai Marina collapsed will be given bail, said a company representative yesterday.

The detained workers, a crane operator, an engineer and an assistant foreman are all Indians. Seven workers died on the spot and 24 workers were injured in the accident.

"The company decided to put up bail because we believe that it was not a deliberate act on the part of these workers. It was an accident. The company has also decided to appoint a lawyer for them," said the company representative.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in a statement issued soon after the accident took place said that human error was the cause of the accident.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Chief, said the upper part of the bridge collapsed because the iron rods placed on it were too heavy.

The initial announcement of giving 10 years' salary as compensation to the families of the dead was doubled by the company on Saturday.

"The company has also decided to provide Dh20,000 (Indian rupees 214,233) immediately to each of the dead workers' families. The compensation cheque has already been handed over to the Indian consulate.

"The money will be dispersed to the families by the consulate. The family of each dead worker will receive an estimated Dh220,000," said the company representative.

He added the Dh20,000 would help the families until the full compensation sum reached them.
