Dubai: Two executives have each been jailed for three months for permanently disabling a clerk after running over his leg in a road rage incident.

The Dubai Court of First Instance found the Syrian executives, 26-year-old A.Y. and 24-year-old M.W., guilty of assaulting the Indian clerk and causing an eight per cent permanent disability to his left leg.

Prosecutors accused A.Y., a sales consultant, and M.W., a commodity promoter, of punching the 34-year-old clerk, M.A., and throwing him onto the side of Jumeirah Beach Road before driving their vehicle over his left leg.

Medical reports confirmed the victim sustained a permanent disability which prevented him from bending his knee.

When the suspects appeared before Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout, they pleaded not guilty. The defendants, who were present in the courtroom yesterday, were taken into custody.

The clerk testified the incident happened when he spotted the defendants driving recklessly and performing stunts near the Burj Al Arab.

Pain

"We stopped at two signals before I asked the driver of the car why was he driving recklessly… he asked me to pull over at the right side. Then he came out of his car and walked towards me. He pulled me by my neck before he blew a strong punch in my face. I warned him that I would call the police, before the second person came and pushed me strongly. They went back to their vehicle and when they drove off, they ran over my leg and I fell down in pain," said the victim.

An Australian producer, who witnessed the incident, said: "I spotted two Arab-looking men beating up the Indian… I pulled over and walked towards them. One of them returned to the car and moved it forward, meanwhile his associate passed beside me and laughed in a mocking manner before he joined his friend. I saw the Indian lying down on the floor and he seemed in pain..." testified the Australian who phoned an ambulance.

The primary verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.
