Dubai: A Filipino waiter has been jailed for life after a court convicted him of attempting to sell drugs.

His compatriot, a woman has been acquitted of the same charge.

The Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday also fined the 25-year-old waiter, A.C., Dh50,000 after he was found guilty of possessing two pouches of methamphetamine weighing 0.16 grammes for trading purposes.

Pronouncing yesterday's judgment, Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir said the waiter will be deported after serving his punishment.

The 30-year-old Filipina clerk will be deported after serving one year in jail, after the jury convicted her of consuming a mind altering substance, amphetamine. She was cleared of trying to sell drugs for lack of evidence.

Prosecutors accused 30-year-old C.T. and A.C. with possessing two pouches of methamphetamine for trading purposes.

"No, that's not true… I am innocent," argued A.C., when he defended himself in court.

C.T. pleaded not guilty and strongly denied the charge of possessing and trafficking drugs but admitted taking amphetamine.

Wednesday's judgment is still subject to appeal within 15 days.
