Dubai: A student has been cleared of threatening to send the mafia to kill a female visitor  if she did not drop her theft complaint against him.

Citing lack of corroborated evidence, the Dubai Court of First Instance acquitted the 24-year-old Iranian student, H.S., in absentia, of verbally threatening to kill his countrywoman, F.M., after she lodged a theft complaint against him.

The victim’s 28-year-old Iranian friend, F.K., claimed to prosecutors that the incident happened seven days after F.M. lodged a theft complaint against the suspect on March 12, 2012.

“We were at my residence when the suspect called F.M. on her mobile phone. F.M. switched on the speaker phone of her mobile and I heard the suspect saying that he would kill F.M. He claimed that he was in Istanbul and that he would have the mafia chase my friend and kill her,” claimed F.K.

Prosecution records did not specify which mafia the suspect referred to.
