Dubai: The negligence of some home owners, who leave their doors unlocked, makes them easy preys to thieves, Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has said.

Leaving front doors unlocked is an invitation to criminals to enter houses, especially at night, and steal expensive items, Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Director of CID, said yesterday.

Such criminals are especially active in areas inhabited mainly by bachelors, where thieves sneak into their apartments at night and rob them while the inhabitants are sleeping.

"Many people leave their doors unlocked or even open, and leave valuables on tables or inside unlocked cupboards, only to discover in the morning that they have been robbed," Brig Al Mansouri said.

He added that the targeted items include mobile phones, expensive watches, laptop computers and wallets.

Reporting activities

Brig Al Mansouri urged all residents to immediately report any suspicious activities they notice in residential areas to allow police to take the necessary measures promptly .

Some methods used by criminal include monitoring houses to ensure that all inhabitants are out before breaking into them.

They also ring the door bell to make sure no one is at home, and if someone answers, the thief quickly asks some random question or poses as someone who has lost his way.

Beggars and street vendors, too, pose security threats which must be dealt with carefully, he said.

"Reporting any of these people to police is the best course of action, because the police will get there in quick time to handle these cases," Brig Al Mansouri said.
