Dubai: Police are taking a different approach to connect with youngsters in society and teach them good behaviour.

"Saeed Hemaya", a cartoon character, will take charge of spreading awareness among youngsters and tell them how to avoid getting involved in deviant behaviour. Additionally, it aims to spread awareness on the dangers of drug addiction.

Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Dubai Police's Deputy Commandant General, on Tuesday launched Dubai Police's first cartoon character to spread awareness. The launch comes as part of the Character Dubai 2008 exhibition.

The move also comes as part of the international programme to combat drug addiction "Hemaya" which Dubai Police is carrying out in cooperation with the United Nations and which has a dedicated website www.hemaya.ae.

Saeed Hemaya campaign consists of cartoon episodes, a website and a children's magazine featuring Saeed, Jameela, their friend the falcon, their grandfather and their uncle Salem who is a brigadier in police.

"The cartoon episodes will be ready in three months. Each episode will be for four minutes and will discuss issues such as honesty, choosing friends carefully, saying no to bad things, availing of free time and other issues," Major General Al Mazeina said.

He said Dubai Police is looking to help youngsters understand from their early years the difference between good and bad behaviour.
