Dubai: The traffic department of Dubai Police issued more than 107,000 fines during the month of May, said a senior traffic officer.

Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police General Department of Traffic, said in a press statement that motorists should strongly abide by the regulations of road safety or else they will face strict fines.

“These regulations were placed for individuals who lack responsibility towards their own safety and others, which calls for tougher regulations on specific individuals,'' he said.

Increasing patrolling has helped to reduce the number of accidents and casualties.

During May, police traffic officers issued 107,423 fines in Dubai, of which more than 44,000 were issued in Deira and more than 63,000 in Bur Dubai.

More than 25,000 of the fines were for not adhering to lane discipline while more than 11,000 fines were given for blocking the flow of traffic. The third in the list is not wearing the seat belts with more than 4,100 fines issued.

According to the release, more than 3,660 fines were issued for stopping in undesignated areas while 2,994 fines were given for motorists of heavy trucks for not adhering to lane discipline. More than 2,700 fines were issued for parking on pavements and around 2,600 fines for stopping on the side of the road.

Many of the fines, around 79,930, were issued while the motorists were not present in comparison to 27,493 fines issued while the motorists were present.
