Dubai police campaign highlights dangers of leaving vehicles on

Dubai: More than 1,900 motorists in Dubai were fined in 2007 for leaving their vehicles while the engines running, said the police. “Leaving your vehicle engine running and doors unlocked while the vehicle is stationary can cause environmental, health and security problems,'' said the police.
In an attempt to create awareness and make motorists abide by the rule, police launched a campaign on Sunday that will run till April 17.
“We intend to reduce the violation by 30 per cent in three months' time,'' said Lieutenant Colonel Ali Ghanem, Director of Naif Police Station, On Sunday.
People tend to leave theirs vehicles running and unlocked that generally lead to thefts, said the official. Sixty-six vehicles, which were left with their engines running, were stolen in 2006 and in 2007, 26 vehicles were stolen, added the official, highlighting the importance of the campaign.
