Dubai: A police official has advised companies that own truck trailers to take extra precautions when storing them as several have been stolen recently.

The trailers are a tempting target because they have a street value ranging from Dh30,000 to more than Dh100,000, a police source said.

Recently, three Asian suspects were arrested on charges of stealing a trailer parked in a deserted sandy area in Jebel Ali Port, said Major Mohammad Ahli, Director of Dubai Police's Criminal Prosecution Department.

An Indian driver reported the incident to the police after finding that the trailer of his truck was missing, Major Ahli said, adding that an investigation was under way.

One suspect has confessed to the crime, police say, while implicating two others he says were accomplices.

Police believe suspect K.H. stole the trailer and took it to a workshop in Al Dhaid, Sharjah, where he planned to have it resprayed to change its appearance.

However, the owner of the workshop refused to do the work without a permit from the police, Major Ahli said.

The suspect then parked the trailer in Al Leyasi, Dubai, and set about trying to find a buyer for it.

The three suspects have been referred to the public prosecution.
