Dubai: An airport porter sought pardon in court yesterday after admitting that he stole a mobile phone and some jewellery that belonged to a passenger.

The Public Prosecution had charged the Kenyan suspect, J.W., for stealing a passenger’s belongings while on his duty at the Dubai airport.

Based on Public Prosecution records, on July 22, when J.W. was hauling passenger’s luggage on the baggage belt in the departure building, he found one of the bags open. So he decided to put his hand inside the bag to check for something he could steal. He then found an iPhone 5, two gold rings, a gold pendant and other silver jewellery and decided to steal them and sell the gold items to a jewellery store at the Gold Souq the next day.

The suspect was arrested by Dubai Police after receiving a call from the jewellery store, where J.W. had decided to sell the stolen items, notifying them about a man who was trying to sell jewellery for Dh1,800 without presenting an ownership certificate.

Police frisked J.W. and found him carrying most of the stolen items and this is when he confessed to his crime.

A verdict will be heard on September 24.
