Abu Dhabi: Attempts to smuggle in 372 heroin capsules and one kilogram of cannabis were foiled at the Al Ghuwaifat Customs post, a statement by the Abu Dhabi Customs (ADC) said.

The ADC also announced that 3.8kg of narcotic substances were seized during a third smuggling attempt at the Abu Dhabi International Airport Customs Post.

During their night shift, inspectors at Al Ghuwaifat Customs Post — in collaboration with the anti-drugs department — inspected two trucks driven by Asians at the customs’ post trucks exit point.

When scanning the first truck, inspectors reportedly found a high-density substance in the cabinet behind the radio. After conducting a thorough search, 372 capsules suspected to contain heroin were found.

While searching the second truck, specialists detected a strange substance hidden behind the driver’s seat. When scanning the vehicle, two dark items identified as narcotics were discovered, weighing almost 0.973kg.

Meanwhile, the luggage belonging to an Asian coming from a South American country allegedly contained a white narcotic substance placed in four plastic bags weighing 3.8kg.

The smugglers and seized substances were transferred to the authorities concerned to complete inspections and to finalise necessary legal procedures.

Mohammad Khadim Al Hameli, Acting Director-General of the General Directorate of Customs, said: “The Directorate’s staff are considered to be our first line of defence and are vital to maintaining the safety within the UAE through its land, sea and air ports.”
