Fujairah: A court has given a drug peddler, who evaded a sting operation and has been on the run for almost a year, a life sentence in absentia.

The Fujairah Court of First Instance incriminated the Pakistani suspect, identified as R.K., of peddling drugs and handed him a life sentence, which is 25 years in prison according to UAE law. The suspect who is still at large was also given a deportation order.

Records said R.K. escaped from the hands of Fujairah's anti-narcotics police teams who plotted a sting operation to capture him and forward him to justice. The accused has been on the run since March of last year.

An undercover informant tipped-off the anti-narcotics police that R.K. was selling drugs from his residence in Merbeh.

Police then wanted to catch the suspect with incriminating evidence, so a trap was set.

The suspect, however, managed to escape to the area of Madha, a small enclave near Merbeh belonging to the Sultanate of Oman, and police have been trying to locate him ever since.

Using the drugs recovered from the sting operation, and other evidence collected against R.K. by the police, the public prosecution was able to build a criminal case against him.

The judge found R.K. guilty of possessing drugs with intent to sell them.
