Dubai: A driver faces 15 years in jail after a court convicted him of intentionally killing a sex worker although he claimed he defended himself after she tried to strangle him.

The Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday found the 24-year-old Bangladeshi driver guilty of the premeditated murder of Chinese sex worker, L.M., and of stealing her mobile phone. Pronouncing yesterday's verdict, Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir said the accused, M.R., will be deported after completing his jail term.

When the accused appeared in court earlier, he said: "I did not kill her premeditatedly ... she offered to have sex for Dh25 but we fought over her fees. She pushed me and tried to strangle me. I almost suffocated ... I grabbed the first thing I found and battered her head to force her to let go of me because I needed to breathe."

Prosecutors accused M.R. of premeditatedly killing L.M. and stealing her mobile phone.

An Emirati police captain testified that the woman's body was found in a building in Naif.

"Police raided the flat and discovered that the Chinese woman, in her thirties, had been battered to death… blood covered the floor and surrounding walls. Preliminary investigations showed that she succumbed two days before. A special investigation team was formed and combed the area until a suspect was arrested for possessing the woman's stolen mobile phone. He claimed that M.R. gave him the phone," said the captain during the prosecution questioning.
