Abu Dhabi: The daughter of one of the 94 Emiratis tried for treason was unable to make it to her Appeals Court hearing due to “extreme circumstances” her lawyer told the court on Monday.

Upon attempting to enter the Federal Court’s parking area to attend her father’s hearing earlier this year, M.A. violated the on-call security guard’s orders who told her she is not allowed to enter the area. Despite the warning, M.A. then proceeded to enter the premises and dropped off her companions before leaving the parking lot.

The Criminal Court of Appeals, however, acquitted the defendant from charges of endangerment which she was initially facing. Instead, M.A. is now being tried for disobeying official orders and is to pay Dh2,000 in fines. She is now appealing this verdict.

M.A. was absent today (Monday) from her hearing at the Court of Appeals, due to “extreme circumstances,” her lawyer Ali Al Abbadi said.

“Her father is currently imprisoned and her mother is also facing trial and the university student could not attend today,” he said.

“I, therefore, request that the session is adjourned,” he added.

The presiding judge made an exception for the defendant and the hearing was postponed until October 7.
