Dubai: Customs officials at Dubai International airport say they have foiled an attempt to smuggle 1.57kg of the drug crystal methamphetamine into the country.

The officials said the drugs had come from Africa and were found when a female customs inspector examined a suitcase.

Seeing suspicious-looking lumps in the baggage, the officer seized it and requested further assistance from another inspector, who discovered secret pockets containing the drugs.

On the left side of the case, customs officers said they found foil wrapped in brown tape, concealing a white substance which looked like crystal methamphetamine, weighing 785g. On the right side, they discovered a similar package containing crystal methamphetamine and weighing approximately 786g.

Ali Al Mugahwi, Director of Airport Operations at Dubai Customs, said the passenger denied all knowledge of the contents of his luggage. He claimed he’d been given the bag and did not know what was inside it. He had been told to deliver it to some people in an Asian country, the passenger told customs officers.

Al Mugahwi said crystal methamphetamine affected the nervous system. It looked like ice cubes or glass, and could take many forms.

He said some medicine companies used the drug to produce medicine. However, it could also be combined with chemicals such as those found in cleaning products.
