Sharjah: Police Sunday arrested a man who they said dressed as a woman and stole thousands of dirhams from grocery shops.

A Sharjah Police spokesman told Gulf News that the UAE national would frequently visit grocery shops in Sharjah and request Dh100 in phone credit, plus change for Dh1,000.

Police said when he received the phone credit and change, the suspect would drive away without giving any money in return.

Colonel Mohammad Rashid Byat, Head of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Sharjah Police said: "Shopkeepers are urged to be vigilant against people who request change".

"The shopkeepers should make sure that they have the money first before they change them into smaller notes. That way, they can easily reduce the risk of being conned," he said.

The man was arrested after police received an increasing number of complaints from groceries and supermarkets that a woman dressed in abaya and niqab, had stolen money.
