Dubai: The emirate is home to almost 200 nationalities and its geographic location makes it a hub for trade, transit, and exchange of cultures and skills.
As the city grows so does the security challenges it faces. This has become increasingly apparent in the past few years with some major high profile crimes committed in Dubai. Those cases made headlines even in the international media.
As an emirate with a dominant expatriate population, many people have interests in Dubai and often those interests collide. Dubai Police's role in combating serious crimes has been further highlighted in international media — most recently the assassination of senior Hamas commander Mahmoud Al Mabhouh.
The police's major contributions were awarded by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, recently, which includes their efforts in solving the "Pink Panther" operation — the jewellery robbery in Wafi City in 2007.
In 2008, the police managed to solve the murder of Lebanese singer Suzan Tamim and of a former Chechen commander. The case was solved within a week by Dubai Police.
The list of these high profile cases highlights the major breakthroughs achieved in a short time span.
