Sharjah: Police are cracking down on reckless bikers who perform stunts in residential areas and pose a hazard to pedestrians.

A senior official at Al Hera Police Station told Gulf News that reckless driving is most common among teenage boys along the Corniche in the Al Fisht area.

"The boys tamper with the motorcycles to increase their speed and they drive recklessly with no regard for anyone else. This problem has become more noticeable now that summer is approaching and many schools are off during the exam time," said the official.

The speed of the motorcycles is particularly dangerous since Al Fisht is an area that is popular among families for picnics, and is frequented by visitors and children on weekends.

"We have received a large number of complaints from residents in that area, as well as from the parents of the teenagers who indulge in performing theatrical acts with their motorcycles," the official said.

Swimmers warned

He added that a number of Anjad patrols have been intensified in the city to prevent these bikers from performing stunts on the streets, and that all offenders will be penalised.

As the summer is fast approaching, police have also issued a warning to swimmers who frequent the beach from the Coral Beach Hotel up to the Sharjah Ladies Club.

"The tides are becoming stronger by the day, and swimmers have to be vigilant when swimming and to observe the warning signs displayed along the beach. Some areas of the beach are restricted to swimmers, and they should follow the instructions that are written on the notice boards."
