Dubai: A court has increased the punishment for a man who killed his pregnant wife after suspecting her of conceiving illegally.

The Dubai Court of Appeal sentenced the 44-year-old Filipino husband to life in jail after a lower court sentenced him to 15 years.

The Filipino, who killed his wife by smashing her head against the bathroom wall, will be deported after serving a life term (25 years in jail under UAE law), said the appeals court.

"I smashed her head on the wall twice, but I didn't intend to kill her," the accused told the court earlier.

The Public Prosecution charged the defendant, who worked as an electrician, with the premeditated murder of his wife.

Records said the man fought with his wife because he was jealous and "suspected that she carried someone else's baby".

"She was scheduled to return to the Philippines just one day prior to her death. I told her that I didn't want her to give birth and bring up a child who wasn't mine," the husband testified before the public prosecution.

According to court records, he hit her head against the wall four or five times, leaving her dead.

"I washed my hands, locked her in the room from the inside and escaped through the window," the husband said. "She used to receive phone calls and messages from unidentified men."

The victim's brother testified that the defendant was jealous. The victim once worked as a housemaid for a British family.

"My wife saw water and blood seeping out of the victim's room. I got inside the room through the window, which was left partially open after I failed to open the door. She was lying dead and naked," the British sponsor testified.
