Clerk pleads not guilty to robbing businessman at gunpoint
A clerk has denied stealing $35,000 (Dh128,000) and Dh55,000 from a businessman at gunpoint, along with two other accomplices, after they offered to drive him in their car to Sharjah.
Dubai: A clerk has denied stealing $35,000 (Dh128,000) and Dh55,000 from a businessman at gunpoint, along with two other accomplices, after they offered to drive him in their car to Sharjah.
Records said the 36-year-old Somali clerk and his alleged associates - who are still at large - drove the 29-year-old visiting businessman from Sierra Leone, towards Al Mamzar area where they stole his backpack, which contained the money.
The goons are said to have threatened their victim with a knife and gun, before forcing him out of the car and speeding off.
"I am not guilty... I didn't do it," the clerk, M.H., told the Dubai Court of First Instance where he dismissed what he described as uncorroborated accusations.
The Public Prosecution charged the suspect with stealing the moneybag after he pointed the knife to the businessman's, D.I., stomach and one of the accomplice pointed a gun to his (the alleged victim) forehead.
The businessman alleged in his statement that the suspects offered to drop him to Sharjah for Dh20.
"I was in the back seat. The driver pulled over at Al Mamzar and they grabbed my bag and pushed me out of the car," he testified.
Police arrested M.H. after tracing down the car. A verdict will be heard soon.
