Dubai: A cashier admitted in court on Monday that he misused a residency stamp to forge a document and used it to reimburse a refundable deposit that he had paid for his cousin's visa.

Prosecutors accused the 31-year-old Palestinian cashier, R.Y., of sneaking into an office branch of Dubai's Department of Residency and Foreigners' Affairs.

Then he unlawfully used an Emirati employee's stamp on a visa receipt to be able to reimburse Dh1,000 that he had paid as deposit to process a visa for his cousin.

"Yes sir I misused the department's stamp on a receipt to be able to reimburse the deposit of Dh1,000. I did not have any criminal intention but I just did so to reimburse the money. I did not embezzle the money from the department," argued R.Y. when he defended himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors accused R.Y. of sneaking into the Emirati employee S.H.'s desk and used the latter's stamp on the receipt.

He was also accused of forging the stamp and signature on the receipt and used it to embezzle the department's money. The defendant's lawyer asked Presiding Judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi to treat her client with leniency "because he didn't have a bad intention".

The employee S.H. testified that the incident happened at one of the department's branches in Deira.

Presiding Judge Al Mahdi adjourned the hearing until March 5 for the court to review the forged receipt.
