Dubai: A bodybuilding trainer has pleaded guilty to abusing his job in Hatta Sports Club, embezzling Dh4,891 from the register and hiding it in a box of protein supplements.

Prosecutors charged the 31-year-old Indian trainer with abusing his position as a public servant and embezzling the money by faking a burglary and destroying the club's glass and register to turn police suspicions away from him.

"I am guilty as charged," said the bodybuilding trainer, A.N., when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors charged A.N. with embezzling public funds and destroying public property.

The defendant confessed to his charges before Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir who adjourned the case until next month for judgment.

A 40-year-old Indian gymnasium trainer, S.M., testified that he discovered the burglary the next day in the morning when he reported to work.

When questioned by prosecutors, the suspect admitted: "I collected the fees and handed them to S.M. At the end of every month we give the fees to the club's accountant. I decided to embezzle the money… around 1am I headed to the training hall, broke the glass with a stone... I opened the gym with my keys, walked in and broke the drawer and then took the money. I hid the cash in a box of protein supplements and placed it in the ceiling."

He was quoted as saying, in prosecution records, that after the embezzlement was exposed, police arrested him and he admitted to his charges. A verdict will be heard soon.
