Abu Dhabi: A blacksmith, who became a paraplegic following a workplace injury, will receive Dh1.2 million in compensation from his company.
The Abu Dhabi Supreme Federal Court held the company, where Indian expatriate Anil Prasad, worked, responsible for his medical, moral and financial damages.
In a civil lawsuit lodged against Prasad's company. his lawyer Karunagappally Shamsudeen, of Al Kabban Advocates and Legal Consultants, claimed that his client sought Dh3 million in civil compensation against injuries and permanent disability he sustained when the crane, on which he was working, accidentally collapsed at a worksite in Abu Dhabi.
"When the crane collapsed sideways, my client fell off and injured his belly and chest and broke his hips... he also incurred severe fracture in his 12-disc in his back.
"Thereafter, he became paraplegic and lost control over his urine and excretion system.
"He underwent several surgeries and had a number of medical instruments implanted in his body to help him survive."
The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution accused two company employees of failing to implement safety and security measures at the worksite. The Abu Dhabi Misdemeanors Court found them guilty as charged and fined each of them Dh5,000.
A court-assigned doctor testified that Prasad sustained 100 per cent permanent disability in his sexual organs, legs and excretory systems.
