Sharjah: Police in Sharjah have confiscated 750 bicycles and 20 motorcycles as part of a campaign to enforce traffic rules and prevent bikers from modifying their engines.
Colonel Mohammad Eid Al Madhloum, director of Operations Room at Sharjah Police, told Gulf News the crackdown on cyclists and motorbikers was part of an on-going campaign for enforcing traffic rules.
"The campaign is divided into two parts. First, it aims to stop cyclists from riding on the opposite direction of oncoming traffic as well as in prohibited areas, such as on highways," said Col Al Madhloum.
He also pointed out that police aim to stop bikers from illegally modifying their engines in workshops because that is one of the main causes of traffic-related deaths and is also a nuisance to residents and other road users.
"The second part of the campaign is to prevent criminals ... [activities], since a large number of police patrols are constantly on the look out for any suspicious behaviour in residential and commercial areas," said Col Al Madhloum.
An inspection committee monitors traffic offences, "which was successfully able to pinpoint the areas where street races are carried out and have document all the vehicles' details".
