Accused wants swift judgment and deportation

Dubai: A Sri Lankan babysitter charged with stealing a total of Dh3,500 from her sponsor admitted to her charges on Thursday.

"Yes sir, I am guilty. I took the money from my sponsor," confessed 36-year-old S.I. when she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

Prosecutors accused S.I. of embezzling various sums of money from her Emirati sponsor.

‘Spoke badly of me'

"I want a swift judgment and to be deported soon… I took the money because they spoke very badly about me while I was working for them," the defendant said.

The sponsor's 25-year-old son testified that the babysitter took money from his bedroom.

"I had placed Dh19,000 in cash on a table in my bedroom. When I returned eight hours later, I discovered Dh2,000 were missing. I didn't pay much attention to the matter," he said.

"The next day I again went out after placing Dh9,000 on the table…when I returned after two hours, I realised there were Dh1,000 less. So I informed my mother, but we didn't pay much attention...."

"A day later, I again left Dh19,000 on my table and went for Friday prayers. When I returned I discovered Dh500 were gone… so I told my sister. She searched the babysitter's handbag and found Dh3,200 in her possession," the son said in his testimony.
