Ajman: An Asian man has been arrested for possession of 7,920,000 counterfeit rupees, said Ajman Police yesterday.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Ajman Police, confirmed the suspect was arrested after police received a tip that a man had a large quantity of counterfeit money.

Police received word that an Asian man was laundering counterfeit 500 Indian rupee notes in exchange for UAE currency, said Al Matroushi.

Police nabbed the man when he tried to exchange 4 million fake rupees for Dh130,000, police said.

A subsequent search of the alleged counterfeiter’s house, car and place of employment uncovered more fake currency.

Police investigation revealed that the suspect had violated UAE residency laws and was staying in the country illegally.
