Ajman: Ajman Police recently caught 4,071 men and women of various nationalities who either absconded from their sponsors and were illegally staying in the country or entered the country illegally, a senior police official at Ajman Police said yesterday.

Colonel Shaikh Sultan Bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, deputy director of Ajman Police. told Gulf News that the number of illegal residents increased this year compared with the same period last year, according to Ajman Police statistics.

The total number of illegals arrested in Ajman from Januar to June this year reached 4,071 compared with 3,560 arrested during the same period last year. The police said those caught had entered the country illegally or absconded from their sponsors or were staying illegally in the country. They took part in activities to earn cash quickly, by either hawking goods on streets or begging.

The arrested have been referred to the public prosecution for further action.

On January 5, as many as 70 police inspectors started an extensive and intensive inspection in all areas of Ajman including buildings, apartments, housing, farms and premises in the industrial areas looking for people who have violated UAE residency laws.

The announcement was made on January 4 by Ajman Police commander-in-chief Brigadier General Ali Abdullah Alwan.

The number of inspectors eventually increased to 2,000.

The police inspectors received permission from the public prosecution for entry and inspections to flush out illegal residents and absconding labourers and housemaids.

Most of the absconding housemaids were living in apartments.

The inspection teams had electronic devices which enabled them to check on the identities of the people at the place of inspection and to determine whether or not they were illegal residents.
