Dubai: A court has sentenced a 19-year-old girl to one year in jail for possessing and trafficking 0.92 grams of hashish and acquitted her compatriot of the same charge for uncorroborated evidence.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Emirati girl, F.E., and cleared her 20-year-old compatriot student, A.H., of illegally possessing and promoting hashish, as charged by the Public Prosecution.

An informant alerted the Anti-Narcotics Department that the girl was looking for someone to buy from her a small hashish pouch.

Evidence

A police lieutenant said in his statement that a female police corporal phoned the accused and posed as a buyer. F.E. met the buyer and sold the hashish for Dh1,000. "An anti-narcotics unit raided the place and arrested the girl. She admitted to selling the drug and took out the Dh1,000 from her pocket and handed it to the police."

The witness said F.E. claimed that she took the drugs from A.H. who allegedly asked her to sell the hashish. Police arrested the student and referred the two to court.

A.H. denied his charges and the court acquitted him over lack of evidence. The initial verdict is still subject to appeal.
