Sharjah: Immigration officials have arrested 113 illegal residents in a series of inspection campaigns in Sharjah in the last three days, a senior immigration officer has said.

Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, acting Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior for Naturalisation, Residency and Borders, said the violators were arrested from different parts of the emirate.

Out of these, 31 illegals were harboured by some firms in what he termed as "secret hotels''.

"One Asian man was arrested for offering refuge and employment to those illegal residents,'' he added. He said the Ministry's crack down on illegals and those who aid them would continue.

Major General Al Menhali said the squad for following up illegals and foreigners was able to arrest 31 illegals of various Asian nationalities found hiding in their accommodation last month.

Some illegals hid in large barrels while others hid in kitchen cupboards in a labour accommodation in Sharjah Industrial area, recently, Lt Col Al Menhali added. Earlier, police also arrested an Arab man for providing accommodation to illegals.

He was sentenced to two months in jail and a fine of Dh2 million and deportaion. Colonel Saeed Rakan Al Rashidi, Director of the Department for following up illegals and foreigners at the Ministry, urged expatriate residents to cooperate and report illegals or those who help them.
