Dubai: A worker has been jailed for a year for unintentionally causing his co-worker’s death after they scuffled over switching off a water pump in a farm.

The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 22-year-old Bangladeshi worker, M.D., guilty of beating his countryman, M.B., with a tool on his head, causing his death.

“I did not kill him. He beat me on my head and I was injured in my head and arms,” said M.D.

The accused will be deported following the completion of his jail term, said Presiding Judge Ali Attiyah Sa’ad on Monday.

Prosecutors said M.D. beat M.B. with a tool and caused his death without intending to do so.

A retired Emirati testified that in November 2012 one of his farm workers told him a brawl was taking place.

“I rushed to the farm and saw the victim down on the ground and bleeding from the back of his head. He was still alive. Knowing that he was a heart patient, I saw a bag of medicines beside him. The defendant was fine but had an injury on his head and arms. Immediately I called for an ambulance to rush M.B. to the hospital. Meanwhile I took M.D. to a private clinic. Later I was informed over the phone that the victim had passed away in the hospital,” said the Emirati.

An Emirati police lieutenant said the defendant admitted that he fought with the deceased because he had switched off the water pump.

Monday’s judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
