Dubai: A worker who struck his boss with a shovel when he asked him to do some extra work, has been sentenced to six months in jail.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 32-year-old Pakistani construction worker, W.M., in absentia after he failed to show up in court and enter a plea.

W.M. was said to have attacked his countryman boss with the shovel when the latter ordered him to do some chores in July 2013.

Prosecutors charged W.M. with hitting his boss, S.I., with a shovel on his right arm and causing him a permanent disability.

Dubai Police’s forensic medicine report confirmed the victim sustained a ten per cent disability.

S.I. testified to prosecutors the incident happened when they were at a construction site in Al Fuqa’a.

“I asked the accused to do some work. He got angry and attacked me with the shovel that was in his hand. He pounded my right arm with the shovel and injured me. I still suffer constant pain,” the victim told prosecutors.

The defendant was cited admitting according to his statements before the police and prosecutors that he assaulted the victim with the shovel.

According to the Criminal Procedures Law, the accused is entitled to a retrial as soon as he turns himself in and contests the primary judgement as it was issued in his absence.
