Dubai: An American tourist, charged with possession of marijuana and hashish, appeared in court with a doctor’s note which permits him to use the drugs for medicinal purposes.

Records show the 34-year-old suspect was prescribed the medicinal use of Tetrahydrocannabinol (the psychoactive compound found in the substances) by a doctor in California. The document approves the use of marijuana to treat his ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and has been stamped by the UAE embassy in the United States.

Over 60g of hashish, including candy laced with the substance, and 2.5g of marijuana were seized from his luggage at Dubai Airport. The plastic bags carrying the drugs were labelled Strain, Green hornet and Cheeba Chewa.

“A doctor in California prescribed the medicinal use of marijuana,” the suspect told investigation officers. “It calms my nerves and is used to treat my ADHD and anxiety problems,” he said.

The court will reconvene at the end of the month.
