Policeman sacked over sex bribe

Dubai: A policeman will dismissed from Dubai Police and jailed for five years for accepting a bribe in the form of sexual favours in return for not arresting an illegal maid.

The 38-year-old policeman spotted the 33-year-old Filipina maid, who was waiting at a bus stop with her two countrywomen, at Dubai Academic City in May. After he discovered that the three Filipinas had been reported absconding from their employers, the 33-year-old woman offered to have sex with him in return for not arresting her.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant, Y.A., of accepting a bribe by having sex with the Filipina, J.B.

Meanwhile, the woman was jailed for three years.

“Y.A. will spend five years less three months in jail while J.B. will spend three years less one month in jail. The latter will be deported following the completion of their sentence. As for Y.A. he will be sacked from his job,” said presiding judge Mohammad Jamal on Tuesday.

Prosecutors accused Y.A. of accepting a bribe in the form of sex. The maid was charged with offering a bribe to the policeman.

The duo had entered a not guilty plea.

A lieutenant from Dubai Police’s anti-corruption department testified that they had received a number of complaints against the suspected policeman.

“We were informed a number of times that Y.A. had been requesting sexual bribes from women staying or working illegally in Dubai. The information that we received mentioned that he used to ask illegal residents [women] for their identification cards and contact numbers. Then later he would attempt to befriend these illegal residents and request to have sex with them or any form of sexual service against not turning them in. We placed him under observation.

“Surveillance teams noticed that he picked up a woman and drove into the parking lot of a college at Academic City. The surveillance team members did not go close to his car as they did not want to be noticed. When he drove his car out of the college, we stopped him. He was confused and scared when I introduced myself and asked him if he had company with him. He denied this several times until he finally admitted that he had a woman with him… the two suspects confessed that they had consensual sex in the parking,” said the lieutenant.

Records said when the college’s security guard was asked why he allowed the accused to drive his car into the college’s premises; he said the head of security had ordered him to do so.

The lieutenant cited Y.A. admitting that he borrowed his friend’s car because it had tinted windows.

The 38-year-old defendant was quoted confessing to prosecutors that he spotted the 33-year-old maid and two others waiting for a bus.

He claimed that he suspected them and, when he asked them for identification cards, he discovered that their employers had reported them as absconders.

“She offered to give me money and to have sex with me in return for not detaining her. I took her to the college’s parking and had sex with her,” the accused was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile J.B. confessed to the investigating prosecutor that she had consensual sex with the policeman in order to avoid arrest.

The couple was tried before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court for having consensual sex.

Tuesday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
