Dubai: A visitor was apprehended inside a courtroom immediately after a judge sentenced him to three months in jail for attempting to molest a tourist at a luxury hotel on Palm Jumeirah.

The 45-year-old Indian visitor, D.K., was charged with attempting to hug the Iranian female tourist in the hotel’s elevator on January 17.

The defendant failed to appear and enter a plea before the Dubai Court of First Instance during the first hearing.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal was reading out D.K.’s name to pronounce the judgement when the defendant stood up.

The judge immediately ordered the courtroom’s policemen to apprehend D.K. and take him into custody.

The accused was sentenced to three months in jail followed by deportation.

Records said when the defendant tried to put his arm around the woman’s waist she pushed him away and rushed out of the elevator.

A police first sergeant testified that the hotel’s reception informed the police about the incident.

“We headed to the hotel. The woman was present in front of the concierge desk. She claimed that once she walked into the elevator the defendant spoke to her. Then when he tried to hug her she pushed him away and left the elevator. The hotel’s security restrained the visitor and kept hold of him until we [police] arrived. During questioning, D.K. said he did not hug the woman but he only asked her about his room number,” the first sergeant told prosecutors.

Dubai Police’s forensic report confirmed that the footage taken from surveillance cameras showed the defendant trying to put his arm around the woman and hug her.

The claimant also said that the defendant asked her about her nationality as well.
