Dubai: An airplane technician has been jailed for three months for attempting to steal perfumes and make-up sets left behind by passengers at Dubai International Airport.

The 27-year-old Sri Lankan technician, K.M., was found guilty of abusing his duty at Emirates airlines and attempting to picking up three make-up sets and two perfumes that belonged to women passengers.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted K.M. after he entered a guilty plea and asked for forgiveness.

“I am guilty. I ask the court to forgive me and hand me a lenient punishment,” said the defendant when he entered a plea.

An Emirati policeman testified that he was on duty on October 3 when he discovered that the technician had stolen some items left behind and tried to take them out of the airport.

“It was around 5.30am when K.M. finished his work and was about to leave the airport from the engineering department.

“When he passed through the scanner, it beeped. I discovered that he carried in his handbag perfumes and make-up sets. When I asked him about those items, at first he claimed that they belonged to him. Then he admitted that he took them from the airplane after passengers left them behind,” the policeman claimed to prosecutors.

Sunday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
