Dubai: Three maids have been accused of ganging up against their employer and stealing Dh35,000 in cash, a digital camera and other valuables from her before absconding.

The Emirati employer said she was going to use the money to pay some bills, according to her prosecution statement, she then fell asleep after one of the accused served her tea.

Prosecutors charged the three Indian maids, 27-year-old M.S., 31-year-old B.N. and 30-year-old M.R., with stealing the Emirati woman’s cash, television, digital camera, house keys and four crystal cups.

Prosecution records show that B.N. and M.R. remain at large.

“I did not steal anything … I am innocent,” said M.S. before presiding judge Urfan Omar at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday.

The Emirati testified before prosecutors the incident happened shortly before she went to pay her Dewa bill in December.

“I prepared Dh35,000 to pay the Dewa Dh20,000 bill and etisalat bill plus the fees to renew M.S.’s visa. Our Dewa bill was so high due to the maids’ overconsumption of electricity and water… I had warned them against overusing the Dewa utilities. I asked M.S. to prepare me a cup of tea. Shortly after I drank the tea, I fell asleep and woke up a couple of hours later. The maids were gone.

"I asked my Filipina maid if she had seen any of the suspects, but she said no. The Filipina alleged to me that she had spotted the trio piling some bags, which they claimed to be garbage, onto a small carriage and they had gone to dispose of them. She claimed that she never saw any of them after 10.30am. I waited for 30 minutes and when they did not show up, I called them but none of them replied.

"When I discovered that the money had been taken from my bag, I suspected that they must have robbed me and absconded. Then I was sure that they robbed me when I discovered the other belongings were missing,” said the Emirati. The woman reported the matter to the police.

A ruling will be heard on May 5.
