In this modern era, fads come and go as fast as lightning, often leaving a heavier impact on our pockets than our minds.

With changing fads and the rapid growth of technology, we rarely think twice before jumping from one model to another. Gadgets such as mobile phones, music players and digital cameras which are no longer needed are just being thrown away, like regular trash.

We may know a lot about the megapixels of our mobile phone's built-in camera or how many gigabytes of information our memory cards can hold. Yet, we are not aware that these efficient, but expensive gadgets can hold hidden dangers, if they become e-waste.

Most electronics have substances such as lead, beryllium, arsenic, mercury and antimony. With unsafe disposal, it might give way to human ailments in the nervous system, kidneys, liver, lungs, mouth and teeth.

Moreover, if these substances are burnt, they can emit toxic gases that might negatively affect the Earth's atmosphere. Due to our ignorance, e-waste is now the fastest-growing factor among our waste.

Fortunately, this problem has a simple solution that only requires cooperation and understanding.

We can recycle our electronics by donating them to charities, who may find individuals that are in desperate need of our giveaways. We can also sell old models of gadgets for a good price.

Anyone who has bought a new mobile phone can also safely dispose their old device by taking it to an etisalat Business Centre and depositing the phone in a specially marked box. These mobile phones would then be taken to a special facility in Dubai Investment Park, before being sorted and shipped to manufacturers for recycling or safe destruction.

We can also begin to buy brands that reuse or recycle parts.

Let us all start following these tips to make our world a better place for all members in this global community. We should not allow advancing technology to get the better of our environment. For once, let us give back to nature instead of always asking from it.
