Dubai: A car ramming into a running tram after jumping a red light on Thursday has brought the question of safety into the spotlight, just over a month before the Dubai Tram begins operations.
The accident took place near the Dubai College on Al Sufouh Road, when a woman driving a white sedan, hit a tram on a test run.
According to Dubai Police, neither the driver nor anybody else was hurt in the accident, but the vehicle sustained damages to its front portion, the tram escaped with only minimal damage.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver exited the Dubai College car park and collided with the oncoming tram.
Gulf News briefly spoke to the woman who appeared to be alright, however, the accident brought the issue of public awareness about driving around the tramway.
According the traffic rules the tram has the right of way on the road and traffic lights will turn red across all junctions when a tram is passing.
New road signs have appeared all along the tramway alerting motorists, pedestrians as well as cyclists to be wary of oncoming trains.
Awareness campaigns are also being carried to educate people on how to behave around the tramways.
Most of the 10.6km long tramway that shares the road space with the motorists is fenced.
