Abu Dhabi: Motorists in the UAE can pay part of their traffic and parking fines issued in Abu Dhabi in instalments, starting from Sunday.

The reprieve available for three months — From June 1 to August 31 — will be applicable for those who were issued at least two fines with a combined value of at least Dh1,000 and their vehicle registration renewal date has already expired. The minimum two fines should include fines for traffic and parking violations.

Violators can pay 50 per cent of the amount at the time of renewal of their vehicle registration and the remaining amount can be paid in monthly instalments within a year, Abu Dhabi Police announced in a statement on Saturday. This is applicable for vehicles registered by individuals only, while companies and other organisations cannot avail of this option.

If there is only one fine, it should be paid in full, irrespective of the amount, said the official at the Directorate of Patrols and Traffic at Abu Dhabi Police.

Brigadier Hussain Al Harithi, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, said all branches of the directorate in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region will provide this option to vehicle owners from Sunday.

The easy payment option is applicable to traffic and parking fines issued in Abu Dhabi alone. Fines in other emirates should be paid in full during the renewal of the vehicle registration.

The fines issued by the UAE authorities, including the traffic police and municipalities in other emirates, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, and authorities in other GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) nations do not come under the instalment payment system, Mohammad Hamad Al Muhairi, Director of Mawaqif Division at the Department of Transport, said.

Vehicle owners from other emirates have to first clear the fines issued in other emirates and visit Abu Dhabi Traffic Directorate branches to avail of the instalment scheme for Abu Dhabi fines, he said.

If a person has two vehicles and both have been issued fines amounting to more than Dh1,000, he or she can pay the fine of one vehicle and renew the licence of both.

If there are any complaints about parking fines, vehicle owners can approach Mawaqif, Al Muhairi said. A designated department looks into the complaints and takes immediate decision to avoid delay in vehicle licence renewal, the official said.
