Abu Dhabi: Around 41 vehicles with faded licence plates have been impounded during the first five months of this year, the Abu Dhabi Police announced on Tuesday.

Drivers caught with intentionally wiped out or altered licence number plates to get away with speeding under the radar included some who came from neighbouring countries thinking they would not be caught.

Police officials also announced that their modern surveillance equipment enables them to identify such vehicles even without their licence number plates.

Ahmad Al Zaidi, head of serious accidents division in Abu Dhabi Police, said that steps are being taken to rigorously monitor internal and external roads for vehicles with altered licence number plates, curved ones or those attached using chains.

Such violations are punishable by imprisonment or a fine not less than Dh20,000 or both.
