Sharjah: Thirty eight people were injured after a bus carrying workers collided with a cement mixer truck in the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to Sharjah Police. Twenty eight workers were slightly injured, eight sustained moderate injuries while two were seriously hurt. They were taken to Kuwaiti and Al Qasimi Hospitals in Sharjah and to Khalifa Hospitals in Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

All the passengers and drivers were Asian.

Sharjah Police said the operations room received a call about the crash at 6am.

Major Abdul Rahman Al Khater, Director of the traffic awareness and media department at Sharjah Police, said the accident happened at the roundabout near the second gate of Sharjah Free Zone.

He said the cement mixer was coming from Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road towards Al Ittihad Road and the bus was coming from the Ajman industrial area and also heading towards Al Ittihad Road.

Major Al Khater said that the inattention of the cement mixer driver caused the accident, as he crashed into the bus from the back on the right side, which led to the bus flipping on its side.

Drivers, he said, should focus on driving and not get distracted by other things such as mobile phones, as well as abide by traffic regulations to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
