Dubai: Saudis have poured scorn on a young man for breaking up with his fiancee three days after their engagement ceremony in order to travel to Turkey.

The fiancee’s father reportedly told the young man that he would approve of their engagement provided they did not travel abroad. No reason was given for the highly unusual condition, but the young man agreed.

However, three days after the engagement, the young man travelled with friends to Turkey and sent a text message to his fiancee informing her that he could not honour the condition set forth by her father and that he was breaking up with her.

“I swear by God that I could not keep my promise to your father, and so we are divorced. Should your father reconsider his condition, I will come back to you,” the young man wrote, Saudi news site Al Marsad reported on Monday.

Saudis harshly criticised the young man as “irresponsible” and “careless.”

“Unfortunately, this is a young man who lacks good sight, good sense and good experience in life,” Rami Barakat commented.

For Tuk, the young man was not trustworthy and served to be punished.

“He failed to honour his word and showed that he did not appreciate married life. He cannot be trusted and it is good they went their separate ways.”

Hind congratulated the fiancee on her good fortune. “Let him go as God will send your way a better man who can honour his word and appreciate the meaning of marriage. He is obviously into a different world and he cannot be trusted,” she said.

Those who supported the young man said that the fiancee’s father was to blame.

“He had no right to put such a condition. He had no right to prevent the fiance from travelling abroad as amounted to slavery, not marriage,” a commentator writing under the moniker of “Life Wasted” posted.
