Manama: Saudis have lauded a Yemeni expatriate who rolled out a red carpet to welcome his mother as she landed in Saudi Arabia.

A video clip circulated on social networks showed how the son laid the narrow red carpet at the end of the escalator at King Khalid airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh and waited for his mother to come down. The woman was assisted by a passenger.

As the mother walked on the carpet, the son promptly knelt down and kissed her foot in a mark of high respect.

He then stood up and the mother and son hugged each other, local news site Al Weam reported.

“It is a scene that brought tears to my eyes,” a commenter writing under the moniker Pencil posted. “I only wish other people would show great respect and genuine love for their parents.”

Another social media user said that he prayed for both mother and son for “sharing such a wonderful level of love.”

“Your gesture has truly humbled me,” Raqi said. “I do pray for the son to live a happy life and to have his sons and daughters respect and love him passionately and I congratulate the mother on this grateful son. I wish the younger generation would emulate this wonderful example,” he said.

Al Sarem, another commenter, said that the Yemeni son proved that mothers had to be respected at all times, and not just on occasions.

“There are those who keep boasting about Mothers’ Day and celebrate it with great fanfare while they tend to forget their mothers the rest of the year,” he said.

“Respect and love for mothers is due throughout the year, day in, day out. We should never ever allow our jobs or children or our friends distract us from sharing special moments with our mothers. True happiness is to be shared with parents, especially mothers,” he said.
