Manama: A car driven by a US citizen working in Saudi Arabia was targeted in an attack in the north of the country, local reports said.

The unknown assailant initially rammed his vehicle into the American’s car before firing shots at it, near the city of Tabuk on the way to Madinah, Saudi daily Al Sharq said. The driver was not hurt in the aggression.

According to the newspaper, the American citizen, in his 50s, works for a company with links to the public sector. Tabuk police confirmed the incident.

“The operation room in Tabuk was informed at around 1 pm that a car driven by a resident American citizen had been subjected to a crash and shooting from another vehicle while driving on the road,” Maatooq Al Zahrani, the head of the police, said.

“No injuries resulted from the incident except for some damages to the car because of the crash and the bullets. The competent police authorities have launched an investigation,” he said, quoted by Al Sharq.

No details have emerged on whether the incident was a deliberate attack on the US citizen or a merely case of road rage. Thousands of Americans live and work in Saudi Arabia, mainly in the eastern part of the country.
