Manama: A Saudi teacher collapsed and died as she was being honoured for her retirement after a lifetime of teaching.

The teacher, Mariam Al Ghamdi, reportedly suffered a massive heart attack during the ceremony held to honour her after 30 years of teaching students.

An ambulance was called in and medics tried to revive her, but her body did not respond, Saudi daily Al Madina reported.

Al Ghamdi, a teacher at a school in Al Khobar, was mourned by the general director of education in the Eastern Province district, who offered his condolences to her family.

"Our solace is that she has left a highly-positive legacy, thanks to her devotion and dedication throughout the years to educating and teaching," Abdul Rahman Al Mudaireis said. "She has earned the respect and love of all, and we pray to God to reward her for her wonderful deeds."

Online users expressed full sympathy with her family and offered prayers for the teacher's soul.

Those who knew her described her as an "outstanding person who really cared about people".

"God bless her soul. I am one of her former students, and I testify that she was an outstandingly gentle and benevolent teacher," the user, writing under the moniker of Night Stillness, posted.

Another user paid tribute to her high morals and commitment to work ethics.

"She is well known for her charitable actions as well, and we all keep her in our prayers," the user said.
