Manama: Customs officers in Saudi Arabia have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 16,984 bottles of Vodka.

The liquor was hidden in a consignment of mango and pomegranate coming from a neighbouring country and transiting through Saudi Arabia, local daily Okaz reported on Tuesday.

“A truck carrying fruit and heading to a neighbouring country was going through the routine procedures at the border when the customs officer suspected something was wrong,” Abdul Rahman Al Mahna, the general director of Batha customs, said.

“A thorough search of the truck revealed the existence of the liquor bottles concealed in the load.

“Traffickers and smugglers are constantly attempting to find new ways to beat the system and smuggle in banned products into the kingdom,” he said.
