Manama: In a fairy-tale romantic wedding, a Saudi couple celebrated their wedding on roller skates.

The event was a breakthrough in the tradition-conscious Saudi society as the bride and groom decided to do away with their high-heels and shoes to don the roller skates and rolled up their way to the reception hall in a mesmerisingly steady pace.

The groom, Husain Bin Mahfood, a professional skater ranked third on Asia, toyed with the idea of the roller-skate wedding since 2012 when he watched a couple in France do it.

He was well aware that the Saudi society would not accept it, but he was determined to make his wish come true, and when he shared it with his bride, Hanan Al Reemi, a Jeddah university architecture student, she welcomed it.

Reports in Saudi Arabia said that the two mothers were not initially keen on it, but they eventually accepted it.

Reem said that some guests on the wedding day were worried she would have serious problems skating with her overflowing dress, but she too was determined to make the wish become a reality and she went ahead with it.

Social media overwhelmingly saluted the courage and determination of the couple and comments wished them bliss and happiness together.

According to Saudi daily Okaz, roller skating has gained enormously in popularity in Saudi Arabia and the sight of young people skating in parks, corniches and esplanades has become highly familiar.
